The Sigma Chi Fraternity’s newest resource for supporting its members’ mental health and well-being is now available to be used by all brothers. Sigma Chi Lifeline is designed to help any brother or friend who needs support and information on a range of mental-health issues, or who is struggling through challenging times.
Through a partnership with The Jed Foundation, whose mission is to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention measures, the Sigma Chi Fraternity wants to send a message to its members that their safety and welfare are its top priorities.
The Jed Foundation provides first-class mental health support on the topics of handling stress; mental issues such as anxiety and eating disorders; bipolar disorders and schizophrenia; and borderline personality and suicidal behavior. The foundation offers a self-evaluator tool that the user can complete for himself or for a friend to gauge their mental wellness. The website also includes Sigma Chi-specific articles that address suicide prevention practices and mental health information.
The Sigma Chi Lifeline help line, which you can reach by dialing 1 (800) 273-TALK (8255), is also available if a brother needs access to support immediately—the help line has no automated system to wait through.
Sigma Chi has lost seven brothers during the past three years to suicide, and the Fraternity believes that Sigma Chi Lifeline can help its members know that they are supported as undergraduates and alumni.
Anyone with questions regarding Sigma Chi Lifeline can contact Senior Director of Membership Development Jim Cogdal, BRADLEY 2003, at (847) 869-3655, ext. 253, or at jim.cogdal@sigmachi.org.
