The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. These efforts include blood donation, disaster relief aid, lifesaving training, humanitarian aid and service to the Armed Forces.

Sigma Chi is pleased to partner with the American Red Cross as the latest initiative to assist chapters in reaching a goal of 20 hours of community service per man per year set forth by the Executive Committee. Additionally, chapters are encouraged to coordinate local blood drives on their campuses across the country in the month of October to provide lifesaving blood to a worthy cause. Sigma Chi is excited to have members and chapters play a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of those afflicted by tragedies we’re all too familiar with.

“We are so excited to have this opportunity to work with your members to establish sustainable blood programs around the country which will make positive impacts for your communities. I’m so impressed with your continual commitment to assist communities and hospitals with the need for blood.” – Tracy Crooks, American Red Cross representative for Sigma Chi

Member Stories

Len Hicks, GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN 1975

After signing up to volunteer for the Red Cross upon leaving his military service, Order of Constantine Sig Len Hicks, GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN 1975 has never looked back. The first blood drive he ever helped coordinate still holds a record in the community for most units of blood donated. Years later, after many hours of volunteering and numerous units of blood donated, Hicks helped lead the way for Sigma Chi to partner with the world’s largest humanitarian network.

“The Red Cross can utilize Sigma Chi, and I think Sigma Chi can utilize the Red Cross. It’s a great avenue for an undergrad to move into volunteerism and at the same time bring credit to his Fraternity.” – Len Hicks

“My impression of Sigma Chi ever since I joined is that we’re a group of men who believe that good enough isn’t good enough. We want to be that level above when it comes to community service, when it comes to leading, and when it comes to serving, which is part of Sigma Chi’s DNA and the Red Cross DNA.” – Darrell Fuller

Beta Rho Chapter - Montana State University

For close to a decade, the Beta Rho chapter of Sigma Chi at Montana State University has hosted a blood drive for students and local community members to give back. Not only have brothers donated blood, they have also assisted with marketing efforts and helping the Red Cross with event setup and donor check-ins. Since 2018, the Beta Rho chapter has donated at least 370 units of blood in total.

“It’s really great to see brothers who are enthusiastic about helping their community.” – Jack Clifford, MONTANA STATE 2023

Chris Arrington, TEXAS TECH 1984

As an undergraduate and Consul for the Epsilon Nu chapter, Chris Arrington, TEXAS TECH 1984, made sure giving back to the community was a high priority for the brothers in Lubbock. He helped partner with the Red Cross to create a blood drive that would be at the forefront of his chapter’s philanthropic efforts. Since then, Arrington has stayed active with the Red Cross and has donated almost seven gallons of blood to those in need.

“I’m glad to see, as a fraternity, we are focusing on health and the gift of life through blood. Here’s to my next six gallons and this great partnership.” – Chris Arrington
