When asked to describe what a typical undergraduate will experience by attending Sigma Chi’s Grand Council meeting, Grady Hepworth, IDAHO 2014, who is one of two undergraduate representatives to the Executive Committee (EC), doesn’t mince his words.
“Grand Council is an awesome experience and a great opportunity to create strong [bonds of brotherhood] at the international level of Sigma Chi,” he responds enthusiastically. “Many of the brothers that I have met at Sigma Chi’s international events have become my lifelong friends. It is always so staggering to really realize how strong our brotherhood is, regardless of [where we come from.]”
Hepworth hopes to recreate that feeling at this month’s Grand Council, which will take place June 27 to 29 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago — North Shore Conference Center in Skokie, Ill.
At the conference, undergraduates will vote on legislation concerning how potential new members are referred to in the Fraternity’s Governing Laws, and will elect their undergraduate representatives to the Executive Committee for the 2014 to 2015 year. In addition, attendees will participate in breakout sessions expanding upon Sigma Chi’s Jordan Initiative.
Hepworth says that if you are an undergraduate who is interested in becoming involved with Sigma Chi on the international level—perhaps as his successor as an undergraduate representative to the EC—then attending Grand Council is an absolute must.
“My time served on the EC has hands-down been one of [my] greatest experiences as a Sigma Chi. The perspective you get of Sigma Chi as an international brotherhood, rather than just a local chapter, is mind-blowing,” he says. “I learned as much in my one year on the EC as I did in four years in college, and that experience is just too invaluable for someone to not take advantage of.”
