As of June 3, Sigma Chis across the United States and Canada had contributed more than $936,000 to the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) in the July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, fiscal year. Fraternity leaders hope to make a strong push during the remainder of the month to lift that total past the $1 million mark for the first time in history.
To help close the $63,841 gap that separates Sigma Chi from the $1 million mark, philanthropy committee chairman Dan Shaver, TEXAS TECH 1993, says that he is looking for 50 Sigma Chis to accept a $1,000 fundraising challenge. If the Fraternity is able to reach that goal, says Shaver, it would be an “historic record for Sigma Chi, and a message of hope for the 1.8 million people who were diagnosed with cancer this year, and the many, many more who are fighting [against the disease.]
“With only about half of our chapters actively contributing to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation,” adds Shaver, “it is also a sign that we are just scratching the surface of the impact we can and will have in the future.”
