When he spent the 2014 summer working as a Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (LTW) intern at Sigma Chi International Fraternity Headquarters, Isaac Waalen, MINNESOTA 2015, learned firsthand that there’s much more to hosting an event that brings together nearly 2,000 Sigs than merely showing up.
“I was really interested in getting that opportunity to experience the Fraternity at an international level, and seeing what goes on behind the scenes to put on a big event like Balfour LTW,” says Waalen. “What I didn’t expect was the sheer magnitude of the planning that makes an event like that possible. It’s hard to overstate the value of meeting Sigs from other chapters in such a centralized event.”
Headquarters staff members are now working feverishly to plan the July 30 to Aug. 1, 2015, Balfour LTW, which will again be at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Undergraduate Sigs who are interested in applying to become interns are encouraged to reach out to Associate Director of Leadership Programs Matt Coffin, DEPAUW 2013, at matthew.coffin@sigmachi.org.
Waalen remarks that the internship is valuable to those Sigs who wish to give themselves a greater knowledge of what sorts of skills are needed to make such large events run smoothly—something that is applicable, he says, to the business world.
“Whether it’s working in a workshop or a business, the power to get along and work with others was a huge aspect of what I saw that is integral to making an organization run. That’s not exclusive to Sigma Chi; that’s important for every organization,” he says.
“If you’re passionate about the Fraternity and want to work with people with similar interests, this might be one of your only opportunities to have an experience like that,” continues Waalen. “There’s so much to learn about what it means about being a Sigma Chi and how that experience can help you relate to others who have gone through some of the same experiences. Take advantage of it, and learn how to use your values in action.“
“Not to mention,” he adds, “that Chicago is a great place to spend your summer.”
