After continued discussion with administrators from the University of Houston, the Executive Committee of Sigma Chi International Fraternity has decided to close its chapter there. The action follows the consideration of concerns regarding the health of the chapter, namely that its members were not living up to the values of the organization. However, the Fraternity looks forward to maintaining a positive relationship with the University of Houston and to returning to campus after the summer of 2019.
In four years, all of the Sigma Chis who are undergraduates on the campus will have graduated, and the Fraternity plans to work with the university to rebuild its presence there. Regardless, all of the current undergraduates within the chapter have been moved to special alumni status, meaning that their undergraduate activity as Sigma Chis must cease.
“It was after working with University of Houston administrators and voicing shared concerns that we made our decision to close the chapter,” says Sigma Chi international president, Mike Greenberg, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 1982. “We do not take closing a chapter lightly, but it was in our best interests to do so. We look forward to working with the university so that the Fraternity may return to campus in the future.”
