How to become a Sigma Chi volunteer

Chapter Advisor: 

Responsibilities: Serves as chairman of chapter advisory board; works directly with chapter officers and executive committee; serves as liaison between chapter and alumni, university officials and General Fraternity; oversees the submission of required reports, forms and fees. 

Requirements: Is appointed by the Grand Praetor; attend new chapter advisor training at Krach Transformational Leaders Workship once every three years; dedicate three to six hours per week to attend chapter and executive committee meetings; attend annual province conferences; assist with chapter as needed. 

 

Chapter Advisory Board:  

Responsibilities: Share responsibilities and workload of chapter advisor; recruit alumni involvement and contribute to improvement of chapter operations; help with chapter development; provide leadership guidance; instill accountability within the chapter; provide consistency between undergraduate leadership teams during times of transition. 

Requirements: Volunteer for at least two years; attend regular meetings of the chapter advisor’s board; attend undergraduate chapter meetings once every four to six weeks during school year; assist with undergraduate chapter events; be available to assist with other responsibilities as requested by chapter advisor or Grand Praetor. 

 

Grand Praetor: 

Responsibilities: Advise chapters in their respective province; maintain general knowledge of a chapter’s condition; endeavor to improve chapters’ standing in scholarship, morals and discipline; enforce the Fraternity’s governing laws and Ritual; appoint chapter advisors; review chapter reports and applications to the General Fraternity; schedule yearly conference of all chapters in province; makes sure each chapter administers the official pledge examination and that each man meets initiation requirements; appoints an undergraduate member from province for representation at Grand Council. 

Requirements: Nominated by one or more undergraduate chapter delegates in province and elected to serve a two-year term; must visit each chapter in province at least once a year and report observations and recommendations in writing to the Executive Committee. 

 

Krach Transformational Leaders Workshop Facilitator: 

Responsibilities: Help undergraduates develop core objectives of the chapter’s strategic plan; teach educational sessions related to chapter officer positions; train members in personal and professional development of leadership skills; hold authentic discussions about leadership challenges young men face today. 

Requirements: Complete six months of training as assigned; review and understand workshop facilitation materials; mentor assigned undergraduate members throughout the academic year; provide mentorship as needed for the next 12 months. 

 

Horizons Huntsman Leadership Summit Guide: 

Responsibilities: Inspire undergraduate leaders to positively impact chapters, campuses and communities; explore how leadership is directly linked to one’s values and character; teach how to incorporate high-minded values into the lifelong practice of leadership; communicate how to discover and utilize one’s full potential.  

Requirements: Be at least five years removed from undergraduate education; attend weeklong training session held every two years in Snowbird, Utah; agree to a minimum of three Horizons sessions over the next six years; be onsite for seven days during sessions; and support and follow up with small group participants for the next two years. 

 

House Corporation Board Member: 

Responsibilities: Serve as part of a legally incorporated entity that owns or manages the chapter’s housing property; maintain the physical structure, provide common furnishings, administer leases, and anticipate future needs’ handle housing finances, including collected funds, paying bills, maintaining records and securing insurance and loans; may also hire and supervise employees and contract vendors; ideally visit the property regularly; and create a positive residential, academic and social environment for all members. 

Requirements: Ideally live in reasonable proximity to chapter house; possess business acumen in real estate, finance, law, insurance, construction or property management; previous experience in chapter advisor or other advisory board roles is valuable; have strong communication and time management skills; have strong passion to provide premier housing for the chapter and support its continued success; and must serve as positive role model for active members.

  

Grand Trustee:  

Responsibilities: Serve as liaisons to any person, corporation or association holding interest in real property for the benefit of members; have a professional background ranging from real estate and accounting to management and education; offer support to Sigma Chi housing staff and volunteers; serve active members and support effective operations and governance; as part of the Grand Council, assist the Executive Committee and other staff members when requested; represent the Fraternity at house dedications, chapter installations and alumni functions; promote Sigma Chi before academic communities and the public-at-large. 

Requirements: As an elected role, Grand Trustees are nominated and voted on every two years at Grand Chapter.
