As Hurricanes Harvey and Irma ripped through the Gulf Coast this past fall, Sigs in Texas and Florida responded in three separate incidents to help those in need. For their efforts, the Florida Atlantic University undergraduate Sigma Chi chapter, Alex Fleishman, HOUSTON 1994, and Tarleton State brothers Luke Oldham, 2014, and Jake Jones, 2016, were honored with this past winter’s Mark V. Anderson Character-in-Action Leadership™ Award.
A story about the award recipients and their actions was printed in the winter 2017 to 2018 issue of The Magazine of Sigma Chi. “We were super excited to see ourselves in The Magazine … it definitely set the tone for us throughout the semester,” says Bonney, explaining that the chapter wanted to build upon that positive energy and lead by example around their university campus.
On Sept. 15, 2017, Bonney, four of his chapter brothers, and members of two other Greek-letter organizations moved tree branches from sidewalks and raked leaves in an effort to assist the maintenance staff at the university following Hurricane Irma. Bonney said the chapter received positive feedback from the university, their classmates and Greek-letter organizations.
“They thanked us for organizing the event. It not only makes Sigma Chi look good — it makes Greek life at [Florida Atlantic University] look good,” Bonney says. “Everyone was really grateful for what we did.”
In addition, Fleishman, organized four other Sigs and two additional people in the collection and delivery of cleaning supplies to those in the town of Sour Lake, Texas, following Hurricane Harvey. Fleishman and the others delivered the items on Sept. 9, 2017.
Also, Oldham and Jones took a small boat to Houston in late August to rescue residents from rising flood water that threatened their homes after Hurricane Harvey made landfall and was downgraded to a tropical storm.
The General Fraternity introduced the quarterly Mark V. Anderson Character-in-Action™ Leadership Award in 2007 as a way to honor Sigs who show their good character by going out of their way to help those in need.
