An article recently published concerning Sigma Chi's Derby Days philanthropic event outlines some behaviors that are completely inconsistent with the spirit of the event as conceived by the Fraternity. In an effort to educate and provide guidance to our undergraduates, the Sigma Chi International Fraternity long ago published guidelines on the appropriate manner in which Derby Days should be conducted. Chief among the purpose behind the guidelines is to provide direction as to what types of conduct is acceptable during Derby Days, especially as it relates to respect for women and sensitivity toward the communities in which our men live. We are displeased to learn that some of our chapters may not be abiding by those principles and will work in a dedicated manner to resolve these issues expeditiously.
Principally through the Derby Days platform, our undergraduates raised more than $4 million for charitable organizations during the 2014 to 2015 academic year with more than $1 million going to our official philanthropic partner, the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, in support of Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. It is our hope that Derby Days can continue to be a staple of charitable giving well into the future while respecting the rights of all students and their communities.
