After helping the Washington University men’s basketball team to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament and a No. 17 national ranking, Ben Hoener, 2013, nabbed some individual recognition from the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) for his basketball skills.
Hoener, a senior guard, was named to the NIC’s annual All-Fraternity All-American Basketball Team as a third-team selection. This team is made up of players from all NCAA divisions and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Hoener, a co-captain on his team, shot 80.3 percent from the free-throw line and averaged 9.7 points per game, which finished third on the team. The University Athletic Association (UAA) honored Hoener as an All-UAA honorable mention award winner.
Sigma Chi also had two undergraduate brothers earn honorable mention status from the NIC with Evan Croll, UNION 2013, and Peter Nicksic, WABASH 2014, achieving honors. Croll averaged 6.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while Nicksic averaged 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Significant Sig Jay Wright, BUCKNELL1983, earned honorable mention in the NIC coaching section. Wright is the head coach of the Villanova University men’s basketball team, which finished with a 20-14 record and a NCAA Tournament berth.
The NIC named Rick Pitino of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity as its Coach of the Year. The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity landed two members on the NIC’s first team as Florida Gulf Coast’s Chase Fieler and Florida State’s Okaro White made the squad along with the Theta Chi Fraternity’s Michael Snaer from Florida State University, Lambda Chi Alpha’s Will Tashman from MIT and the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity’s Matt Sullivan from Brown University.
Nominations of players and coaches came from fraternity headquarters, Greek advisors, sports information directors, Greek-letter alumni and undergraduates. The selection committee was composed of a panel of Greek-letter sports enthusiasts.
