After Sigma Chis raised more than $1 million for the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) since August 2015, Order of Constantine Sig and chairman of the Fraternity’s philanthropy committee Dan Shaver, TEXAS TECH 1993, believes that the Fraternity’s brothers have it within them to clear the $1.2 million level by July 31.
“Only 138 [of Sigma Chi’s 242 undergraduate chapters] have contributed to HCI this year, so we have lots of room for growth,” says Shaver. “Our hope is that as people are reminded of this impending goal, that they will direct some of their charitable contributions toward HCI.”
Since naming HCI as its preferred philanthropic partner in 2005, the Fraternity has raised more than $4 million for the organization in its effort to develop a cure for cancer. In June 2015, 68th Grand Consul Michael Greenberg, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 1982, joined HCI founder Jon M. Huntsman, PENNSYLVANIA 1959, in announcing Sigma Chi’s commitment to raising at least $10 million for HCI by 2022. Both Greenberg and Huntsman are recipients of the Significant Sig Award, as well as members of the Order of Constantine.
At the time of this writing, the Fraternity’s donations to HCI for the current annual period totaled $1,122,459.
