The Sigma Chi International Headquarters staff got into the 2012 Merlin Olsen Day of Service spirit to honor Order of Constantine Sig and Significant Sig Merlin Olsen, UTAH STATE 1962.
To kick off a week of volunteering, on Sept. 11, 2012, the Fraternity and Sigma Chi Foundation staff put together a food drive to benefit the United Church of Rogers Park, located in Chicago. Staffers then donated 11 grocery sacks of food to the church’s food pantry.
Two days later on Sept. 13, Fraternity staffers volunteered at Gilda’s Club Chicago, located in downtown Chicago. Gilda’s Club Chicago is a cancer support community that assists men, women and children and families affected by the disease.
Every year, the organization hosts a Halloween party called Noogiefest for children whose lives have been touched by cancer along with their family and friends. The Headquarters staffers helped organize all supplies required for this day, and they helped the organization unload a truck full of donations for the event.
“It’s great that our Headquarters staff led by example and got into the Merlin Olsen Day of Service spirit by volunteering to a good cause in Gilda’s Club Chicago,” says Sigma Chi Executive Director and Order of Constantine Sig Michael H. Dunn, UTAH STATE 1976. “It’s important that Sigma Chis across North America continue to honor one of our Fraternity’s leaders in Brother Merlin.”
If your chapter participated in the 2012 Merlin Olsen Day of Service, the Fraternity would like to hear about it!
Sigma Chi encourages its members to share their stories of service by sending high-resolution photos — please use the original files from your camera’s memory card to ensure they are the highest possible quality— of your volunteer activities, along with a paragraph describing where the event was hosted and what service was accomplished, to honormerlin@sigmachi.org.
