With the 2012–13 school year winding down, the Sigma Chi Fraternity installed its final chapter of the spring semester with the welcoming of 36 brothers into its Order at the installation of the Florida Atlantic University undergraduate chapter on May 4, 2013, in Boca Raton, Fla.
Now sporting the Greek-letter chapter name Lambda Tau, the former Sigma Chi Phi colony was able to enjoy a trio of celebrations on May 4 at the American Legion Post No. 222 in Oakland Park, Fla. — its installation, the end of final exams and the graduation of its senior brothers.
“Everything [came] to a close all at the same time,” says former Consul Wesley Hebel, 2015. “[The colony process] has been a big growing experience. At the beginning there is a lot of excitement and being naïve about the whole process. As it goes down the line, especially for the older guys, you can see their growth and how the colony process has helped our guys become better leaders.”
The chapter received guidance during its I-week and installation from Director of Expansion Matt Pagan, NORTH FLORIDA 2010, with the assistance of Director of Expansion Nick Conway, CAL. STATE-FRESNO 2010. The Ritual director for the week was Vincent Fernald, A COLLEGE IN BRIDGEWATER, MASS. and MIAMI (FLORIDA) 1990.
The chapter had its Declaration of Intent unanimously accepted by the New Chapter Development Committee (NCDC) and the Fraternity’s Executive Committee on Sept. 17, 2011. It had its Phase One report accepted on March 10, 2012, and its Phase Two report accepted on Oct. 15, 2012, both approved by the NCDC.
Hebel admits it was a trying process en route to the chapter receiving its charter. “Surprisingly, while you know you are doing the steps [toward installation], it does feel a long time away,” Hebel says of the installation date. “And just recently, we finished our paperwork and thought, ‘This is happening. What we have worked so hard to achieve is occurring now.’”
The Fraternity now totals 242 undergraduate chapters, seven colonies and one interest group. Any Fraternity expansion questions can be directed to Conway and Pagan.
