Sigma Chis will converge on the campus of Albion College in Albion, Mich., from Oct. 14-16, 2011, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of the famed serenade song, The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. Byron Stokes, ALBION 1913, and F. Dudleigh Vernor, ALBION 1914, wrote and composed the music while undergraduates at the college. The Fraternity later honored both men with the Significant Sig Award.
The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi hit a new level of fame in December 1927 when a recording of it by Fred Waring charted as the No. 3 most popular song in America, and it remains a traditional serenade heard at special events as Sigma Chis recognize the women in their lives.
At the Albion celebration, which will include the unveiling of a plaque that recognizes the song, a concert and a Sweetheart Ball, will be Sigma Chi Fraternity's 67th International President Dennis Santoli, CASE WESTERN 1967; International Sweetheart Sydney Binnington; and Sigma Chi Headquarters Executive Director Mike Dunn, UTAH STATE 1976.
