Chapter-based “safe driver,” “sober driver” and “designated driver” programs operated by undergraduate members or pledges are no longer allowed by the International Fraternity, which marks a major change to its policy on transportation and designated driver programs.
The existing policy was amended via an email vote by the Fraternity’s Executive Committee on Sept. 12, and immediately goes into effect for all Sigma Chi undergraduate chapters in the United States and Canada.
The prior policy, enacted on Feb. 12, 2015, allowed chapters to continue or implement designated driver programs with specific loss-control measures implemented. With the new policy, in no case may a chapter, its members or pledges organize any kind of designated driver program.
Chapters remain encouraged to establish a transportation policy for chapter events using a form of mass transportation or hired transportation providers that follow the Fraternity’s existing proof of insurance policy.
