In its quest to eliminate hazing from all of its chapters, the International Fraternity is continuing to accept applicants into its amnesty program. Applicant chapters have the opportunity to discuss any of their practices that could be construed as hazing freely and without threat of sanction from the Fraternity until Jan. 1.
“The Ritual charges our brothers with two duties: To hold ourselves personally responsible to our obligation, and to confront and hold accountable those members who do not,” says 69th Grand Consul Mike Ursillo, BROWN 1978. “From time to time, our brothers lose their direction and sense of responsibility. The amnesty program is designed to empower our brothers to become accountable for their actions in a safe environment, where they can recommit themselves to the teachings of our Ritual. Holding one another accountable is preferable to imposing discipline as long as everyone voluntarily participates in the revitalization possible through the amnesty program.”
So far, participants in the amnesty program include such chapters as Southern Methodist, Villanova, Fort Hays, Murray State, Memphis, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Valparaiso, Florida Atlantic and Miami (Florida), among others.
