For Bethel, Conn., resident Kris Karvelis, WESTERN CONNECTICUT 2012, the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, 2012, hit close to home. The tragedy that left 28 people dead, including 20 children, the shooter and his mother, also took the life of the daughter of one of Karvelis’ friends, a girl he played softball with every Sunday last summer.
To honor her memory, and that of the other victims, the undergraduate chapter at Western Connecticut State — led by co-organizers Karvelis and James Heffner, 2013 — will raise money to support the victims’ families through the sale of wristbands that read “Sigma Chi Supports SHES” and “I Support SHES.” Thus far, the chapter has received more than 700 orders from those across North America.
The chapter will also host a benefit dance on Jan. 26, 2013, from 7–11 p.m. in the Westside Campus Center Ballroom with all proceeds donated to the victims’ families. “We just want to be able to help and give back to these families in any way we can,” Karvelis says. “We know money cannot bring back these children, but we want [their families] to realize that the entire community, nation and world is coming together to support them.”
