Significance: 20th Grand Consul Stephen Mather, CALIFORNIA-BERKELEY 1887, was instrumental in his contributions to the National Park Service as the first director of the organization. Nationwide, bronze plaques depicting Mather are scattered at roughly 60 different locations. The new locations include two plaques at the Grand Canyon National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, Casa Grande National Monument, Pipe Spring National Monument, the Saguaro National Park and Walnut Canyon National Monument, all in Arizona. To benefit the Fraternity, the size and visibility of the plaques will not only speak to the achievements of Mather, but also increase the attendance to the National Parks

Each site is marked by a bronze plaque, 29” X 33”.

Location: John Wayne Memorial Plaza, 205 South John Wayne Drive, Winterset, Iowa, about 35 miles southwest of Des Moines, Iowa

Site Nominated April 14, 2022, by Naples/Marco Island & Fort Myers/Estero Alumni Chapter of Southwest Florida.

Site granted Level Four status on July 11th, 2022.

Significance: Significant Sig John Wayne, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1929, is one of the most recognizable Fraternity alumni. The museum, now recognized by the commission, will serve as a reminder of Wayne’s dedication to the Fraternity after he reached stardom. There are numerous museums that have archives of him, but the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum is the only one dedicated entirely to John Wayne. The official recognition given to the museum will ensure that everyone who visits the museum will recognize him as a life loyal Sigma Chi.

Commemoration: Museum contains several buildings, including the home where Brother Wayne was born.  It also includes an extensive collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the actor’s life and career.

Site established by the opening of the museum on May 23rd, 2015.
