Sigma Chi Foundation Announces
Partnership With Folds of Honor

The Sigma Chi Foundation announced on Veterans Day that it is joining Folds of Honor in establishing academic scholarships for the spouses and children of Sigs who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

From the American Civil War through the war on terrorism, approximately 918 Sigma Chi members have served and paid the ultimate price with their lives for the United States and Canada through many military conflicts.

“We are proud of the long tradition of military service from our Sigma Chi brothers including brothers who have sacrificed their lives, many more who have been wounded in conflict and our more than 1,000 living active and veteran military Sigs,” said John Forst, chairman of the Sigma Chi Foundation Board of Governors. “We are equally proud to partner with our brother, Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney, and Folds of Honor to honor our military Sig brothers through this new scholarship program. Folds of Honor is a welcome addition to the long-standing Sigma Chi Military Service Scholarship and the efforts of many military Sigs to raise scholarship funds for current and future generations of military Sigs,”.

“I’m excited to join my brothers on Veterans Day to announce this partnership,” said Lt Col Dan Rooney, founder and CEO of Folds of Honor and a Sigma Chi at the University of Kansas. “Sigma Chi has played a important role in my life and it’s gratifying to see the foundation’s further commitment to assisting those military dependents that deserve and need our help.”

Folds of Honor is a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military members who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The educational scholarships support private school tuition or tutoring in grades K-12, and two- or four-year college/university, technical or trade school tuition.

Lt Col Rooney, the only-ever F-16 fighter pilot and PGA Professional, started the foundation above his garage in 2007, and since its inception, Folds of Honor has awarded over 35,000 scholarships totaling over $160 million in all 50 states. Among the students served, 41 percent are minorities. It is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and Platinum on GuideStar.

“Providing educational scholarships for the families of fallen or disabled Sigma Chi military veterans on our campuses across the United States is a simple way of saying ‘thank you’ for their brave service,” said Sigma Chi Foundation president and CEO Ashley Woods. “This exciting partnership with Folds of Honor is a perfect accent to the educational programming and academic scholarship aid, specifically our long-standing Sigma Chi Military Service Scholarship that we presently provide active duty or veteran Sigs pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degrees.”

The Sigma Chi Foundation’s partnership with Folds of Honor will further enhance existing efforts that serve to recognize and honor the service of the Chapter Eternal military Sigs and those members who currently serve or are retired from active duty in the United States or Canadian militaries, including top officers in each of America’s four major branches of service.

Over the last decade several of these men have received the Foundation’s annual Sigma Chi Military Service Scholarship, which was established to provide support to brothers who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate education during or following military service in any branch of the United States or Canadian militaries.

The Foundation has also proudly recognized honorably discharged or currently serving members of the armed forces by funding the Sigma Chi Military Service Recognition Pin presented by the International Fraternity.
