Evanston, Illinois — The Executive Committee of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity has voted to suspend its University of Texas, Arlington, chapter indefinitely, due to its members’ failure to comply with the Preparation for Brotherhood pledge program and repeated violations of the Fraternity’s alcohol policies.
The Fraternity’s goal is to return the chapter to the University of Texas at Arlington, with the support of university’s administration. In the meantime, initiated undergraduates within the chapter have been moved to suspended active status (SAS), meaning they are recognized as initiates, but may not take part in activities associated with those of Sigma Chi undergraduates.
“It is unfortunate when the Fraternity closes one of its chapters, but the severity of these circumstances made our decision for us,” says 70th Grand Consul (international president) Tommy Geddings, SOUTH CAROLINA 1985. “The offenses that the chapter has committed are simply too grievous to allow the culture that exists within the group to perpetuate. The Executive Committee was left with no other option than to close the chapter,” he says.
